A specialist in law enforcement has expressed concerns about the potential for a crackdown similar to ICE in the UK amid rising worries over the nation’s handling of immigration issues.
Recent data indicates a decrease in both legal and illegal immigration, with the Office of National Statistics reporting the lowest levels since 2012, excluding the impact of the pandemic. Despite this decline, political groups are advocating for a more forceful approach, possibly involving law enforcement.
Drawing parallels to the actions of US authorities under Donald Trump, where ICE agents have been deployed nationwide to identify and expel individuals residing unlawfully, there are fears that a similar scenario could unfold in the UK. Such apprehensions have led one policing expert to admit being troubled, stating, “I lose sleep at night worrying.”
During a lecture on police militarization in the UK and US, Julian Go, a sociology professor at the University of Chicago, highlighted the increasing militarization of British law enforcement. He emphasized that UK police units are resembling armed forces, similar to their American counterparts, with armed units and a military-like mindset.
Concerns about the trajectory of militarization were underscored by worries that the UK might follow the US example, particularly after Reform proposed establishing a UK Deportation Command akin to ICE. The plan, presented by “shadow home secretary” Zia Yusuf, sparked criticism for its potential consequences and implications for the community.
Critics, like Dora-Olivia Vicol, the chief executive of the Work Rights Centre, condemned the proposal as “sadistic,” drawing attention to the detrimental impact ICE actions have had in the US. The vision of implementing similar policies in the UK was described as divisive, wasteful, and harmful to British families and society.
