“Wales Youth Struggles: 23-Year-Old Faces Job Market Challenges”

Date:

A young individual, aged 23, has highlighted the challenges of securing permanent employment despite diligently applying to 20 job positions daily. Chelsea Duke, from Pontypridd, Wales, is among the 1.01 million youth in England categorized as NEETS, facing difficulties in finding work. The Office for National Statistics notes a surge in economically inactive young adults, like Chelsea.

Chelsea, who holds a diploma in animal management and left education at 19, has struggled to maintain steady employment due to frequent relocations caused by unstable housing situations. Despite temporary roles, such as a Christmas temp at Sainsbury’s, she faces constant job rejections even after extensive daily job applications.

The use of AI in screening candidates adds to Chelsea’s frustration, as she feels her applications are swiftly dismissed without human review. Her desired roles in farm work, pet shops, or animal shelters often require a driving license, posing a financial barrier as she cannot afford driving lessons.

Relying on Universal Credit to supplement her income as an artist, Chelsea faced a setback when moving in with her partner, Solomon, resulting in the discontinuation of her benefits due to his earnings exceeding the eligibility threshold. This financial strain adds pressure to their relationship, causing Chelsea guilt for relying on her partner for financial support.

Experts emphasize the challenging job market for young people, with fierce competition and limited opportunities, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Organizations like Good Work and The King’s Trust offer support and advice to help young individuals build confidence, acquire skills, and access employment opportunities. They stress the importance of seeking assistance to overcome barriers to employment and strive for success through skill-building and confidence development.
