The Met Office has indicated the likelihood of thunderstorms in certain UK regions over the upcoming weekend, accompanied by significant rainfall for many areas. This follows the extraordinary heatwave experienced in May, during which temperatures soared above 35C in the southern parts of the country. Weather warnings for thunderstorms have already been issued by the Met Office during the heatwave, and additional warnings may be forthcoming.
Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth from the Met Office mentioned that Sunday could bring instances of rain showers, mainly affecting northern regions, while some showers are expected in the southwest as well. There is also a potential for thunderstorms in the far north within these showers, with eastern England anticipated to receive minimal rainfall but more cloud cover.
According to the latest forecast from the Met Office, heavy rain is projected to progress from the west across Scotland and Northern Ireland on Saturday before reaching Wales and England. Prior to the rain, England is expected to experience warm sunny intervals, with a mix of sunny spells and showers anticipated for Sunday.
The forecast indicates peak temperatures of 29C in southern areas on Saturday and 24C on Sunday. In northern regions, highs of 25C are expected on Saturday, followed by 21C on Sunday. BBC predictions align with the Met Office forecast, indicating rain moving in from the west in northern areas on Saturday, turning patchier in east Scotland, with the likelihood of cloud and showers later in the west. Sunday is expected to be cooler with variable cloud cover, and showers are expected throughout the day, particularly in the far north.
Monday’s outlook suggests the intrusion of cloud cover and outbreaks of rain from the southwest into the UK.
