“London Mayor Pushes for Social Media Ban on Under-16s”

Date:

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is set to endorse a social media prohibition for individuals under 16 today, citing it as essential to mitigate the ongoing negative impacts. The call for action is intensifying on the UK government to emulate Australia in increasing the minimum age for accessing online platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram.

In a forthcoming speech in London, Sir Sadiq is expected to advocate for social media companies to ensure the safety of their platforms for children before allowing access. He emphasizes that until these firms can guarantee platform safety, a ban is necessary to address the current harms.

However, the Mayor will also emphasize that a ban alone will not resolve all issues and will stress the need to rethink social media platforms. He asserts that Londoners deserve platforms that prioritize people over profit, where connectivity does not come at a significant cost.

During his speech at SXSW London, Sir Sadiq will unveil a £1 million support package for boys and young men in the city, highlighting the risks of online misogyny leading to potential consequences for the younger generation.

Furthermore, he will urge tech companies to address the proliferation of misogyny on their platforms and adjust their algorithms to prevent it. Failure to act may prompt governmental intervention, according to Sir Sadiq.

The proposed measures include funding for a new fatherhood program and the deployment of football mentors in various London communities.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall recently hinted at the possibility of implementing a social media ban for under 16s, following overwhelming support from parents during the government’s online safety consultation.

Over 100,000 individuals participated in the consultation, with a majority of parents backing a ban for individuals under 16. The consultation is also considering other restrictions such as app caps and addictive design features.

While some advocate for a ban, concerns have been raised about the potential unintended consequences, including driving young users to unregulated online spaces. Calls are made for tech companies to enhance platform safety rather than relying solely on bans.
