“Italia ’90 Retro England Jersey Sales Soar”

Date:

Replicas of the classic football jersey worn by Paul Gascoigne and his England teammates during the Italia ’90 tournament are currently the top-selling retro football shirts, surpassing sales of the World Cup jerseys. The iconic white design featuring dark navy accents and the renowned Three Lions emblem became famous when Gazza famously shed tears of frustration after receiving a booking in a crucial semi-final match against West Germany.

Despite England’s heartbreaking exit from the tournament in a penalty shoot-out, Gascoigne’s emotional outburst remains etched in the nation’s memory over three decades later. Sports Direct, a leading retailer, announced that the 1990 design is now the best-selling retro football shirt in collaboration with Score Draw, a heritage shirt manufacturer.

In anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Sports Direct is launching a promotional campaign named ‘When Football Was Football,’ hosted by comedian Steve Bracknall, the creator of the fictional football club Royal Oak FC. Market experts report a surge in demand for retro England and Scotland football shirts, featuring timeless designs from past international competitions, with the retro market size doubling since the 2022 World Cup.

Among the top-selling items are England’s Euro ’96 shirt, worn by notable figures like Gareth Southgate, as well as Scotland’s 1996 shirt, adorned by stars such as Gary McAllister and Colin Hendry. Additionally, the 2004 England shirt worn by David Beckham and his teammates is also in high demand.

Steve Bracknall expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming World Cup, emphasizing how the tournament unites people of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a sense of pride, excitement, and camaraderie unique to football. A spokesperson from Sports Direct highlighted that ‘When Football Was Football’ celebrates the traditions, personalities, and jerseys that have captivated fans, bridging nostalgia with a new generation.

Recent reports revealed that England players are eagerly anticipating the World Cup, having purchased up to 1,000 tickets for friends and family at each game. Chief Constable Mark Roberts discussed policing strategies for the tournament and disclosed the significant uptake of tickets by players, reflecting their excitement for the upcoming competition.
