“Beware of ‘Aldi Meat Box’ Scam Targeting Social Media Users”

Date:

A warning has been issued to all Aldi customers to remain cautious and avoid falling victim to a new scam circulating on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Cybersecurity experts at Malwarebytes have observed a surge in deceptive posts offering discounted food boxes to Aldi shoppers in exchange for participating in surveys and prize draws. This scam, known as the “Aldi meat box” scheme, preys on individuals seeking to save money amidst rising living costs.

One fraudulent post highlighted by Malwarebytes claimed that individuals over 40 could purchase an Aldi meat box for under $10, supposedly revealed by an employee’s relative. Clicking on these posts directs users to phony websites where they are prompted to disclose personal and financial details, including addresses and payment card information.

Although the scam primarily targets consumers in Australia and the Netherlands, shoppers in the UK are also advised to exercise vigilance. Malwarebytes recommends skepticism towards offers that seem too good to be true, especially those involving premium products at unusually low prices associated with reputable brands.

Furthermore, the cybersecurity firm cautions against posts that rely on personal anecdotes, like stories of acquaintances working at Aldi, as these are common tactics used by scammers to build trust with potential victims. Arbitrary age restrictions, such as targeting individuals over 40, are employed to create an illusion of exclusivity and relevance.

Scammers often employ a sense of urgency and portray the process as swift and risk-free to prompt impulsive actions from users. Malwarebytes advises individuals to approach social media posts promising heavily discounted products with skepticism until their legitimacy is verified.

Legitimate retailers typically announce genuine promotions through official channels rather than through vague posts shared by anonymous or recently created social media accounts. Consumers are reminded never to divulge sensitive information like card details and addresses on websites accessed through unsolicited social media posts, particularly when the offer appears unusually generous.
