Double murderer Christopher Halliwell had significant connections to the location where a slain university graduate was abandoned three decades ago, according to an investigation by Mirror. Melanie Hall, 25, disappeared after leaving a nightclub in Bath in 1996 and her remains were discovered 13 years later near the M5 in Gloucestershire. Detective Chief Inspector Ben Lavender suggested that the perpetrator may have ties to Dursley, close to where Melanie’s body was found.
Records from the electoral roll obtained by the Daily Mirror indicate that Halliwell’s sister, Sarah, resided in a small town in Gloucestershire at the time of Melanie’s murder. Furthermore, his mother and stepfather lived in a nearby area for two decades. Karen Edwards, the mother of one of Halliwell’s victims, expressed suspicion, stating that the evidence points to his involvement in more crimes and urges authorities to allocate resources for a thorough investigation.
Retired Detective Superintendent Steve Livings commended the Daily Mirror’s efforts in shedding light on the case. Melanie’s father, Steve, hopes for closure by seeing her killer brought to justice. Melanie was last seen wearing specific clothing items, which remain missing to this day. Halliwell’s former associate disclosed details about his familiarity with the area where Melanie’s body was discovered.
Halliwell, now 62, is serving a life sentence for the murders of Becky and Sian. The victims, including Melanie, were all taken after leaving nightclubs in urban settings and later found in rural locations. Former Detective Chief Inspector David McKelvey emphasized the importance of pursuing leads linking Halliwell to Melanie’s murder.
The Mirror uncovered court documents revealing Halliwell’s criminal past, including burglaries and thefts. After evading authorities for several years, he was eventually apprehended in 2011 for the abduction and murder of Sian. Despite legal challenges, Halliwell was convicted of Sian’s murder, while Karen’s persistent efforts led to his prosecution for Becky’s murder in 2016.
Recent developments have implicated Halliwell in another unsolved murder case from 1994, highlighting potential links to additional crimes. Witnesses and evidence suggest his involvement in the abduction and dumping of another victim. Avon and Somerset Police are exploring these leads, although they are not currently prioritizing Halliwell as a primary suspect.
