In a distressing court trial, disturbing footage was presented featuring ‘clapping’ sounds and a voice instructing a young girl to ‘s*** it’. The trial involved three teenage boys accused of raping a 13-year-old girl when they were 12, 13, and 14 years old. Despite emotional breakdowns, the boys were ultimately acquitted of the charges this week.
During the trial at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, jurors deliberated on whether the 14-year-old boy, previously deemed unfit for trial, was involved in the alleged offenses near Newbold tram stop in Rochdale in February 2024. The prosecution claimed that the boys circulated mobile phone footage of the incident, containing ‘clapping’ noises and derogatory comments towards the girl.
The courtroom witnessed tears and sighs of relief as the jury foreperson delivered the verdict, clearing all three boys of rape and ‘joint enterprise’ charges. The boys maintained their innocence throughout the trial, arguing that the encounter was consensual.
Prosecutors highlighted that the girl was physically pushed and pressured during the incident, leading to a swift intervention by her friend. Defense attorney Rachel Shenton emphasized the nuanced nature of consent, pointing out the girl’s alleged inconsistencies in her account of the events.
In closing statements, defense lawyer Peter Gilmour stressed the young age of the boys and the need to consider their actions within the context of adolescence. Following extensive deliberations, the jury unanimously found the boys not guilty on all charges, concluding the trial.
