A driver under the influence of cocaine and alcohol, causing a collision with a police vehicle that left an officer with severe injuries, has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison. Shaun Orchard, 23, was involved in a high-speed chase in Stockport on April 22 last year, resulting in significant harm to Tactical pursuit officer PC Rushton.
Orchard, who had consumed alcohol and cocaine after taking his stepfather’s car, led police on a dangerous pursuit across Stockport. He was observed driving recklessly, reaching speeds of up to 120mph on the M60 before crashing into PC Rushton’s vehicle at a crossroads on Hyde Road.
PC Rushton sustained multiple injuries, including fractured ribs, a complex ankle fracture, a fractured arm, and internal injuries, leading to a life-altering experience. He expressed his emotional distress in court, highlighting the impact on his physical and mental well-being.
The court also heard that Orchard had exceeded the legal limits for alcohol and drugs in his system during the incident. Judge Kevin Slack emphasized the deliberate nature of Orchard’s actions, leading to the serious consequences that followed.
In addition to the prison sentence, Orchard, residing on Neville Street, Hazel Grove, was banned from driving for five and a half years. He admitted to aggravated vehicle taking and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Adrian Beckford of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit condemned Orchard’s disregard for public safety and praised the officers for their professionalism in bringing him to justice. PC Rushton’s enduring injuries serve as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
