“Rugby Legend Kevin Sinfield to Be Knighted”

Date:

Rugby legend Kevin Sinfield is set to receive a knighthood in the upcoming King’s Birthday Honours list. The recognition comes after his exceptional fundraising endeavors in honor of his late friend and teammate, Rob Burrow.

Calls for Kevin’s knighthood have been growing, with him raising over £11 million for motor neurone disease (MND) charities following Rob’s diagnosis in 2019. Kevin, hailed as a rugby league icon, gained widespread praise for his selfless actions, including carrying Rob over the finish line at the Leeds Marathon in 2023.

Both Kevin and Rob were previously awarded CBEs in the 2023 New Year Honours List by Prince William at Headingley Stadium, the home of Leeds Rhinos. Tragically, Rob passed away five months later at the age of 41 after battling MND for over four years.

MND is a debilitating neurological disorder affecting the communication between the brain and muscles, without a known cure, focusing on symptom management. Despite no direct link between MND and head injuries, several rugby players, including Doddie Weir and Lewis Moody, have been diagnosed with the condition.

Kevin, now an England rugby union coach, continues to spearhead fundraising efforts in memory of Rob. The establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds marked a significant milestone in supporting MND patients and advancing research.

Prince William commended Kevin’s children, Macy, Maya, and Jackson, for their father’s bravery and emphasized the center’s potential to save lives. Kevin’s latest philanthropic endeavor, “7 in 7: The Grand Finale,” involves running an ultramarathon daily for a week, spanning from Hull to Manchester, visiting all 12 English Super League grounds alongside individuals affected by MND.

In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Kevin expressed gratitude for his team’s unwavering support in achieving their fundraising goals and stressed the ongoing need to find a cure for MND. The announcement of the King’s Birthday Honours List is anticipated this weekend, with the Government refraining from pre-announcement comments on honours.
