A man, aged 41, facing accusations of killing his teenage girlfriend by crushing her against a lamppost using a recovery truck, admitted in court that he had initially lied about a hit-and-run incident because he was overwhelmed by panic.
The defendant, Mohammed Azim, is charged with using his flatbed truck to intentionally trap 19-year-old Lily Whitehouse against a lamppost following a dispute on his birthday in Oldbury on November 5 the previous year. The young mother, who had a child from a different relationship, suffered fatal chest injuries as a result of being struck by the vehicle.
While standing trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Azim refuted the murder allegations, claiming that the collision was accidental, occurring when he dropped off Whitehouse near her residence.
Initially, Azim misled authorities by asserting that another vehicle had hit Whitehouse and fled the scene. Prosecutors highlighted the defendant’s repeated lies regarding the circumstances of Whitehouse’s death.
Under cross-examination, Azim admitted to fabricating a story about witnessing Whitehouse being struck by a hit-and-run driver to protect himself. He denied pursuing her in anger, asserting that she had wanted to return with him before the tragic incident unfolded.
Further revelations emerged about Azim’s deceitful statements to medical professionals while in custody, including denying a romantic relationship with the victim and making baseless claims about drug-related threats against Whitehouse.
Azim cited medication-induced memory lapses in his defense, explaining his inconsistent statements to authorities. Despite facing intense scrutiny, he maintained that his actions were driven by panic and a disoriented mental state following the traumatic event.
As the trial progresses, Azim expressed deep remorse, stating that he would trade his life to bring Whitehouse back.
