“Labour’s Burnham Triumphs in Makerfield By-Election”

Date:

The victory achieved by Andy Burnham’s campaign team, as well as Labour MPs and others in Westminster, exceeded all expectations. Former Greater Manchester mayor triumphed in the Makerfield by-election, significantly boosting Labour’s majority to 9,231. This win showcased the effectiveness of a progressive Labour vision in overcoming the divisive politics associated with Nigel Farage, propelling Burnham towards his aspirations for Downing Street.

Within the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP), supporters of Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham actively championed their respective candidates. Starmer’s advocates argue that he transformed Labour from an unelectable party to a landslide victory in 2024. Some loyalist MPs view the leadership turmoil as unnecessary drama and express frustration at their peers for not affording Starmer more time to demonstrate his capacity to bring about change in Britain.

Among dissenting voices, there is a noticeable decline in support for Starmer, even within his top team. Previously supportive Labour MPs are now calling for his resignation, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander being the latest Cabinet minister to urge him to map out a dignified exit from No10.

Veteran Labour figures like Harriet Harman and Alan Johnson concede that Starmer’s departure from Downing Street appears inevitable. Despite Starmer’s initial defiance against a leadership challenge, the prevailing sentiment is shifting, leading to challenging discussions within his inner circle as he fights for his political future.

In contrast, Burnham’s team aims to avoid a divisive leadership contest reminiscent of the Tories’ internal conflicts. They are actively lobbying Labour MPs to amass support and pressure Starmer to step down, with the number of backers steadily increasing.

Amid the celebratory atmosphere at Mr. Burnham’s victory rally in Makerfield, the mood was optimistic, marking a stark departure from the recent somber tone among Labour MPs. Activists and MPs enthusiastically welcomed Burnham, signaling a belief that Reform can be overcome with his leadership.

Reflecting on the election outcome, Southport’s Patrick Hurley highlighted the existence of a progressive voting bloc that rallies behind candidates embodying messages of change and hope. The ease with which Reform was defeated underscores the significance of having the right individuals at the forefront.

Despite initial intentions to challenge the Prime Minister imminently, Wes Streeting took a more reserved stance following Burnham’s resounding win, with speculations suggesting potential negotiations between the former Health Secretary and Burnham. Ally Jess Phillips expressed support for a possible agreement between the two, emphasizing the need for strategic decisions to advance Labour’s agenda and counter Reform effectively.
