“Windrush Anchor Recovery Campaign Launched”

Date:

On June 22, 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, marking a significant moment in the ship’s history. Carrying over 1,000 passengers from Jamaica to Essex, the ship aimed to aid in the reconstruction efforts of post-World War Two Britain.

Today, on Windrush Day, the contributions of the Windrush Generation and their descendants to the UK are honored annually. The Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation has initiated a £2 million fundraising campaign to retrieve the ship’s anchor from the Mediterranean seabed. The ship sank in 1954 off the coast of Algeria, resulting from an engine explosion that tragically claimed the lives of four crew members.

Originally a troop carrier, the ship was transporting servicemen from the Far East after the Korean War. Despite the ship’s sinking, all 1,494 passengers were successfully rescued in a remarkable maritime operation. However, attempts by the Royal Navy to salvage the ship were unsuccessful, leaving it submerged.

Initially named Monte Rosa and built in Germany in 1930, the ship was taken over by the German Navy at the start of the war. In a dark chapter, the Nazis used the vessel in 1942 to transport 46 Norwegian Jews to their tragic fate in Auschwitz. Later seized by the British as war spoils, the ship was renamed HMT Empire Windrush, serving a more honorable role until its eventual demise.

The Windrush Memorial Anchor Foundation, led by Marie van der Zyl OBE, is dedicated to preserving the ship’s history. They aim to raise £2 million for the anchor recovery, preservation efforts, memorial installation, and educational initiatives. Contributions are welcome through the GoFundMe page established for the campaign.

To educate people of all ages about the Windrush Generation, The Windrush Board Game is available for purchase. The game aims to highlight the history, experiences, and contributions of the Windrush Generation, with a relaunch planned for Windrush Day.

Additionally, a replica anchor will be utilized for outreach events, exhibitions, and educational activities nationwide. Sir Patrick Vernon, Chair of the Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation, emphasizes that the anchor symbolizes courage, hope, and the invaluable contributions of the Windrush Generation to modern British society. The Foundation’s mission is to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the legacy of the Windrush Generation in shaping British culture.

For those interested in supporting the campaign, donations can be made at gofundme.com/f/monument-for-the-windrushgeneration. The Windrush Board Game is available for £23.37 at www.windrushgame.co.uk, with 22% of proceeds post-Windrush Day being donated to the Windrush Anchor Project.
