The leader of the British Army is set to caution that future UK soldiers will always be accompanied by ground drones during battle. Highlighting the Army’s vital role in UK security, he noted the country’s adoption of new technology and artificial intelligence.
Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Roly Walker, is scheduled to address the UK Land Warfare Conference on the nation’s preparedness for future conflicts. He has informed British weapons manufacturers about the evolution of battlefields towards engagements involving ground drones.
General Walker is expected to stress the necessity for uncrewed ground vehicles, stating that crewed platforms should not deploy without them in the future. He will underscore the Army’s significance in securing and holding territory during conflicts, emphasizing its adaptability to meet future challenges.
Expressing his vision for the Army to be proactive in offense, defense, and resilience, General Walker will assert that rapid adaptation is key to success, with cultural transformation being as crucial as technological advances.
The shift towards uncrewed and autonomous systems as pivotal to future land warfare is evident in recent developments. Former Armed Forces Minister Al Carns emphasized the importance of drone warfare following the Ukraine conflict, a concern echoed by the departing Defence Secretary John Healey.
General Walker will advocate for a fighting system comprising 20% human forces, 40% autonomous systems, and 40% firepower, known as the ’20:40:40′ model for modern lethality. He will stress that the UK’s influence within NATO hinges on its ability to deliver highly capable forces for top-tier warfighting scenarios.
