Support for the monarchy in Britain has hit a three-decade low, as revealed by a recent poll. The survey indicates that 55% of UK residents still favor keeping the Royal Family in place, marking an 11% decline since 2023. This level of support is the lowest recorded in 33 years, since Ipsos began monitoring royal sentiments.
Notably, there has been a significant shift in public opinion over the years. In 2012, during the late Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, monarchy support stood at a robust 80%. However, this figure plummeted to around 60% following her passing in September 2022.
The decline in monarchy backing is largely attributed to the younger population, with only 33% of 18 to 34-year-olds favoring a monarchy, while 45% express a preference for a republic. In contrast, individuals over 55 show stronger support for the royals, with 74% endorsing a monarchy compared to 14% advocating for a republic.
Regarding the reigning King, 60% of respondents express satisfaction with his performance, a rating consistent with his tenure. Nevertheless, these approval ratings fall short of those enjoyed by his mother, the late Queen, who maintained an average 79% satisfaction level from 1992 to 2022.
Prince William receives higher approval ratings than his father, with 71% satisfied with his role. However, this figure is lower than the peak of 89% he reached in 2012. Additionally, 60% of participants believe the monarchy still holds significance for Britain’s future, while 30% disagree.
The survey, conducted in March 2026 with 1,062 UK adults, followed the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Ipsos notes a change in methodology since June 2025, cautioning against direct comparisons with previous data.
Gideon Skinner, Ipsos’ senior director of UK political research, emphasizes the concerning trend of declining monarchy support. While the majority remains in favor of the monarchy, the decreasing figures, especially among younger generations, suggest the need for the institution to prove its relevance for the country’s future. King Charles and Prince William continue to enjoy personal popularity, but efforts are required to win over the younger demographic to ensure the monarchy’s enduring role in the nation.
