Andy Burnham and Keir Starmer met privately today for the first time in almost two months as the Prime Minister gets ready to transfer power.
The two had a discreet one-hour meeting away from Downing Street, following the PM’s announcement of stepping down. This is their first conversation since the Makerfield by-election campaign commenced.
Starmer communicated to his Cabinet his desire for a smooth transition and assured that he would facilitate the handover for his successor. The Prime Minister has authorized civil servants to start briefing Burnham and other potential leadership candidates to help them prepare for governance.
Burnham is the leading contender to replace the PM and could assume office on July 17 unless another candidate emerges. He is scheduled to campaign in south London tomorrow for a local council by-election and rally Labour supporters. Additionally, he plans to outline his agenda through a series of speeches.
Support for ex-Greater Manchester mayor Burnham has been growing, with members of Starmer’s top team positioning themselves for roles in his Cabinet. Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary and former Labour leader, is expected to take over as Chancellor, although there have been concerns over his net zero agenda.
There is speculation that Wes Streeting, who withdrew his own leadership aspirations to support Burnham, might be appointed to the Treasury, potentially attracting controversy among left-wing MPs.
Reports suggest that Shabana Mahmood is likely to retain her role as Home Secretary despite rumors linking her to the Chancellor position. Lucy Powell, Labour’s deputy leader and a close ally of Burnham, is anticipated to play a significant role in the new administration.
Maintaining some of Starmer’s Cabinet ministers has been suggested as a wise move, according to a left-leaning MP. However, decisions regarding the Cabinet’s composition will ultimately rest with Burnham.
The transition to a Burnham government also involves considerations for key backroom positions in Downing Street, such as chief-of-staff and director of communications. Burnham has been consulting with prominent figures to ensure a balanced and effective Cabinet lineup.
