“James Purnell Set for Frontline Political Return”

Date:

James Purnell and Andy Burnham share a long-standing political alliance that dates back many years. Both individuals started as young special advisers during Tony Blair’s early tenure, progressing together within the New Labour circles. They even played on the same football team called Demon Eyes, established by communications expert Tim Allan, who briefly served in Keir Starmer’s administration.

The team’s name was inspired by a Tory campaign poster leading up to the 1997 general election that depicted Sir Tony Blair with satanic eyes. Purnell and Burnham entered Parliament together after the 2001 general election, representing constituencies in Greater Manchester, and even shared an office space.

Purnell quickly advanced in his career, transitioning from a government whip to positions such as Culture Secretary and later Work and Pensions Secretary. Burnham, also on a trajectory of success, took over as Culture Secretary in 2009, humorously mentioning his endeavor to rid the office of “Purnellisms.”

In 2009, Purnell resigned from the Cabinet, advising then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown to step down, emphasizing their shared dedication to the Labour Party. A year later, he made the tough choice to resign from Parliament, expressing a desire to move away from frontline politics.

After spending 16 years outside Parliament, including roles as a BBC executive and chief of a lobbying firm, Purnell is poised to re-enter frontline politics. Expected to serve as Burnham’s chief-of-staff in Downing Street, should Burnham become the next Prime Minister, Purnell’s return signifies a potential shift in political dynamics.

The chief-of-staff position, responsible for managing access to the Prime Minister and wielding significant influence, has been held by notable figures in recent years, each facing criticism for government shortcomings. Purnell’s selection by Burnham indicates a strategic move towards reform within the government.

Described as a clear political thinker in Burnham’s recent book, ‘Head North,’ co-authored with Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram, Purnell’s analytical skills are deemed essential for the demanding role at the core of government operations.
