A 16-year-old boy has been acquitted of the murder and manslaughter charges related to the death of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe, who passed away from a knife wound in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, last December. The teenager, whose identity remains confidential due to being a minor, was declared not guilty by a jury at Bristol Crown Court.
Following the tragic incident, the boy left the scene and informed a group of children at a nearby railway station that Aria’s death was an unintentional mishap. During the court proceedings, he explained that he had grabbed a knife from the kitchen at Aria’s residence and entered the living room to startle her.
Describing the sequence of events, the boy demonstrated wielding the knife in a ninja-like manner before inadvertently causing the fatal injury to Aria while attempting to scare her. The jury deliberated and delivered verdicts of not guilty on both charges, prompting some individuals in the courtroom to quietly exit as instructed by trial judge Mrs. Justice O’Farrell.
Expressing gratitude to the jury for their diligent assessment of the evidence, the judge acknowledged the emotional difficulty of the case and commended the jurors for their composed deliberation. Subsequently, the teenager was informed of his acquittal and was escorted for further processing.
Throughout the trial, the boy recounted his intention to frighten Aria by brandishing the knife he had picked up near the kitchen sink before the unfortunate incident in the lounge. Despite Aria’s proximity, the boy claimed he accidentally stabbed her while attempting to startle her, causing her to fall to the floor.
After the incident, the boy did not seek help for Aria, instead fleeing to a train station where he confessed to a group of children about what had transpired. Subsequently, the police were alerted, leading to the boy’s arrest as he expressed remorse for his actions.
The autopsy conducted by Home Office pathologist Dr. Amanda Jeffery confirmed that Aria succumbed to a single stab wound penetrating her heart, resulting in a swift fatality. Aria’s last day included attending school, participating in a dance class, and preparing mini-pizzas with her mother before the tragic event unfolded.
Following the discovery of Aria’s condition by a family friend and the subsequent emergency response, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
