“Amber Alert Extended: Heatwave Warning in Effect”

Date:

The Met Office has prolonged an amber weather alert for severe heat until tomorrow. Residents in the specified areas are advised to refrain from outdoor activities between 11am and 3pm due to the ongoing hot and humid conditions. The warning, encompassing eastern England and the south-east, will now remain in effect until 9am on Sunday.

Individuals residing in the affected regions have been cautioned about potential health risks associated with the extreme heat, particularly for those vulnerable to such conditions. The general public is also at risk of health issues like sunburn, heat exhaustion, dehydration, nausea, and fatigue due to the prevailing high temperatures, according to meteorological experts.

The advisory suggests potential adjustments to daily routines and work practices to cope with the heatwave. Travel disruptions are expected, potentially leading to welfare concerns for individuals stranded in hot conditions on roads, trains, and planes. Moreover, there is a heightened possibility of power failures and service disruptions as equipment may malfunction under the extreme heat.

The Met Office confirmed that although the weather will remain very hot and humid in eastern and southeastern England, temperatures are expected to be slightly lower than in recent days. However, temperatures are still forecasted to surpass 30°C, peaking around 32 to 33°C in London and East Anglia. Overnight temperatures on Saturday into Sunday are unlikely to drop below the high teens Celsius, with some areas not falling below 20°C.

To stay safe during the heatwave, the advice includes simple steps such as staying hydrated, avoiding the sun, refraining from outdoor activities during peak hours, and taking precautions like carrying water, seeking shade, using sunscreen, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat when going outside.

Residents of the East Midlands, East of England, and London & South East England are encouraged to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to combat the extreme heat.
