Kate Howson initially mistook an itchy red patch on her back for a common rash caused by carrying a backpack while on vacation. However, this turned out to be a significant revelation for the 32-year-old British woman. Kate and her partner Rhys had the opportunity to attend two destination weddings in New Zealand and Thailand in February 2024. The GP referred her to the dermatology department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where specialists suspected the growth might be cancerous. The mole was promptly removed and confirmed to be melanoma.
Further examinations led to a sentinel lymph node biopsy, revealing the cancer’s progression to stage three. Kate’s treatment journey involved considering fertility issues due to the melanoma diagnosis. Despite challenges with IVF, Kate remained resilient and sought counseling to navigate the emotional aspects of her situation.
As a research partnership manager in a social care research team, Kate understood the importance of sharing her story. She emphasized the significance of sun safety and regular skin checks, urging others to be vigilant about any changes in their moles. Kate and Rhys continued to pursue their love for travel, adapting to newfound precautions while exploring new destinations.
