“RAF Red Arrows Receive £360M Jet Upgrade”

Date:

The RAF Red Arrows have received new jets as part of a substantial £360 million upgrade program to replace their aging Hawk aircraft. This investment aims to allow the Red Arrows to retire the Hawk within the British Jet Trainer system, which is a key component of the Ministry of Defence’s defense investment plan. The plan is expected to inspire future generations for years to come.

While the upgrade is a positive development, the Hawk T1 has been a fundamental aircraft for the Red Arrows since 1979, with the squadron being the sole remaining operator of these jets. The Red Arrows pilots have gained international acclaim, attracting thousands of spectators to their events worldwide.

Former Red Arrows pilot Andy Wyatt expressed satisfaction with the progress in replacing the Hawk aircraft, emphasizing the importance of selecting an aircraft that meets operational requirements while also supporting British engineering, safeguarding skilled jobs, and preserving aerospace capability. Wyatt highlighted the significance of the replacement aircraft carrying the iconic red, white, and blue smoke as a symbol of British design and excellence.

Although the specific model to replace the Hawk has not been disclosed, the RAF is preparing to launch a competition to determine the new aircraft. Potential contenders include the Boeing and Saab T-7A Red Hawk, the Leonardo M-346, and the Korean T-50.

Former Red Arrows pilots have advocated for the new jet to be British-made to symbolize national pride. Additionally, there is a need to address the advanced training of future fast-jet pilots, which is currently conducted on the modern Hawk T2 at RAF Valley in Anglesey.

The 28 Hawk T2 aircraft, in service since 2012, have experienced engine-related challenges, leading to limitations in the availability of jets on any given day. The defense investment plan also includes a commitment of £1.1 billion to upgrade the RAF’s Typhoon fighters based in Lincolnshire, along with significant investments in drone technology.
