Lisa Nandy Quits Musk’s X Platform Over Abuse Concerns

Date:

Lisa Nandy has declared her departure from Elon Musk’s X platform, citing concerns over the proliferation of “abuse and misinformation.” The Culture Secretary announced that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will cease all activity on the platform, formerly recognized as Twitter, stating that it poses a threat to the integrity of Britain’s democracy.

Addressing her 302,000 followers, Nandy expressed her decision to withdraw from the platform, emphasizing that what was initially intended for free speech and expression now prioritizes harmful content over constructive discourse. The move was echoed by DCMS, making it the largest government department to disengage from the platform, despite several individual ministers and MPs having previously announced their boycotts.

Last month, attorney general Richard Hermer instructed his office to halt all activities on X due to concerns surrounding the incitement of violence and racism. This decision came in the aftermath of civil unrest in Southampton following the sentencing of Henry Nowak’s murderer.

Former safeguarding minister Jess Phillips supported Nandy’s decision, highlighting the detrimental effects of the platform on mental health and the promotion of divisive rhetoric by its owner, Musk. Musk has faced criticism for his role in sowing discord in Britain, with accusations of inciting civil conflict and interference in politics.

While Nandy and others have taken a stand against X, some government departments, including No10, have refrained from following suit. No10’s relationship with X has been contentious, exemplified by a recent dispute over the platform’s chatbot allowing inappropriate content generation. Calls for the government to sever ties with the platform have been gaining momentum.

Former Transport Secretary Louise Haigh expressed her aversion to X/Twitter, attributing the platform’s decline to Musk’s acceptance of hate speech and online abuse. Haigh emphasized the platform’s unsuitability for communication due to its facilitation of harmful content, particularly in the context of child sexual abuse revelations.
