A mother expressed her shock when she discovered a bald patch on her son’s head, initially mistaking it for a self-inflicted shave with her razor. Kerry Osborne noticed the smooth hairless area on her son Leo Osborne’s head in December 2023, which led her to believe he had attempted to shave his head. However, as more patches appeared, she became concerned and took him to the doctor for evaluation.
Following a series of tests, Leo was diagnosed with alopecia areata by a dermatologist at Colchester General Hospital. Over time, his hair loss progressed, eventually leading to a diagnosis of alopecia universalis, resulting in the loss of hair on his head, arms, legs, eyebrows, and parts of his eyelashes. Kerry revealed that Leo faced bullying, with derogatory comments made by peers both on and off the football field.
Due to the severity of Leo’s condition, Kerry sought specialist treatment under the NHS but was reportedly declined without explanation. Consequently, the family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for private treatment. Kerry has been vocal about raising awareness of alopecia and advocating for education to combat bullying related to the condition.
Leo’s alopecia journey included unsuccessful steroid treatment, regular hospital check-ups, and ongoing efforts to find an effective treatment plan. Despite facing challenges, Kerry remains proactive in seeking solutions for Leo, including exploring private treatment options. The family’s fundraising efforts have enabled Leo to secure a private appointment at Mayfair Children’s Clinic in London, offering hope for understanding the underlying causes of his alopecia and potential treatment options.
As the family awaits a response for a second NHS referral request, Kerry continues to advocate for her son’s well-being and hopes for a positive outcome in addressing Leo’s alopecia. The medical professionals involved have attributed Leo’s condition to genetic factors, prompting the family to pursue private treatment options for his future well-being.
