“Charities Warn of Housing Benefit Freeze Driving Debt and Homelessness”

Date:

A warning from charities highlights how a freeze on housing benefits is driving individuals into a troubling cycle of debt. Recent research indicates that only 1.9% of properties in Britain are within reach for benefit recipients, a decrease from the previous year’s 2.7%. This concerning trend is leading to financial struggles, poverty, and a rise in homelessness among households, with a growing number already residing in temporary accommodation.

The persistent freeze on Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates over the past decade is exacerbating the situation, limiting the support available for rental costs. Advocacy groups are calling on the government to lift the freeze on housing benefits to prevent more households from sliding into poverty and homelessness.

Politician Andy Burnham, set to lead a significant council house construction initiative, has criticized the housing benefit freeze. He emphasized the detrimental impact of the policy in a recent speech, highlighting the strain it puts on families navigating the private rental market through the benefits system, often leading to homelessness and financial burdens on local councils.

Crisis’s Chief Executive, Matt Downie, expressed concerns over the dire circumstances faced by low-income individuals across the country. The frozen housing benefits are driving more people towards debt, poverty, and homelessness, further straining an already overwhelmed system. Downie stressed the urgent need for welfare reforms to support those with limited incomes and prevent the ongoing cycle of hardship.

Citizens Advice’s Chief Executive, Dame Clare Moriarty, echoed the sentiment, noting the increasing struggles faced by families trying to meet rent and basic needs. As housing benefit remains stagnant while rental prices soar, private renters are left with dwindling options, leading to financial strain and deeper debt. Unfreezing housing benefits is seen as a crucial step to alleviate the pressure on struggling households and provide essential support during challenging times.

In response, a Government spokesperson highlighted ongoing efforts to address rising rents and housing shortages through substantial housing construction initiatives and poverty-alleviation measures. Despite progress, the government acknowledges the need for further action, citing investments in homelessness services, affordable housing, and initiatives aimed at improving household incomes and reducing reliance on food banks.

The government reaffirms its commitment to addressing housing challenges and enhancing support for vulnerable populations through a range of targeted interventions and investments to improve living standards and combat poverty.
