“NHS Misdiagnosis Leads to 6 Rounds of Chemo for Young Patient”

Date:

A young patient received six rounds of chemotherapy erroneously due to a misdiagnosis by the NHS. Faye Condon, now 12, was initially diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis at the age of five, a misstep that her mother, Christina, believes significantly impacted her daughter’s life.

Despite doubts about the initial diagnosis, Christina persisted in requesting further medical examinations at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Subsequently, after seven years, Faye was correctly diagnosed with a type of muscular dystrophy that currently has no treatment available.

Christina, residing in Plymouth, Devon, expressed her frustration at the situation, highlighting the toll it has taken on their family life. She emphasized that if the correct diagnosis had been made earlier, they could have enjoyed a more normal childhood with Faye before her condition worsened.

The ordeal began when Faye displayed difficulties in mobility at a young age, prompting a visit to Bristol Children’s Hospital. Despite Christina’s concerns and evidence of Faye’s declining physical abilities, the medical team stood firm on the original misdiagnosis of JDM.

Following a complex journey of seeking answers, Christina’s persistence led to a second opinion at Derriford Hospital, where doubts about the initial diagnosis were validated. Eventually, Great Ormond Street Hospital in London diagnosed Faye with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, confirming Christina’s suspicions.

The heart-wrenching experience has left Faye with deteriorating health, including the need for a ventilator at night and constant medical monitoring. Christina expressed her anguish over the lost time and opportunities that a correct diagnosis could have provided for her daughter.

In response to the family’s concerns, Professor Steve Hams from Bristol NHS Foundation Trust expressed regret over the situation and pledged to investigate further to understand the circumstances fully.

The family’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of accurate and timely medical diagnoses in preventing unnecessary suffering and ensuring proper care for patients.
