Holidaymakers who are used to reserving poolside loungers with their belongings may have to rethink their strategy after a hotel employee was caught on camera removing towels and bags from unoccupied sunbeds while guests were at breakfast. The incident, captured by Lucie Hewes, a 19-year-old from the UK, took place at a hotel in Rhodes, Greece. The footage shows a staff member enforcing the hotel’s policy against reserving sunbeds by clearing away items left unattended.
According to Lucie, the hotel has a strict rule prohibiting the reservation of sunbeds, but some guests disregarded this rule by placing towels, hats, and bags on the loungers before leaving for breakfast or returning to bed. She mentioned that each morning, the pool attendant would come by at around 8 AM to remove any belongings from the sunbeds that were not in use.
Lucie observed that some guests were surprised to find their items missing upon returning, while others were displeased to see other guests occupying what they believed to be their designated sunbeds. She commented that it was amusing to witness and refreshing to see the fair enforcement of the no-reservation rule.
In one instance, a woman confronted a pool staff member, expressing her discontent that her belongings had been relocated, leaving her without a spot to sit. Despite receiving her items back, she disagreed with the policy, which staff members calmly explained was in place to ensure equal access to sunbeds for all guests.
The video shared by Lucie garnered significant attention, accumulating 538,000 views, 23,000 likes, and 294 comments. Viewers praised the hotel’s actions, with one individual commending the initiative and suggesting that all hotels should follow suit.
This incident has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding the practice of reserving sunbeds, a common issue during British holidays abroad. Not long ago, a UK holidaymaker made headlines for resorting to a more controversial method to combat sunbed hogging by sprinkling itching powder on towels left on reserved loungers during a vacation in Majorca. Tom Caunce admitted his frustration with guests who claimed prime poolside spots early in the morning and then disappeared for extended periods.
This incident highlights the ongoing struggle to address sunbed reservation conflicts at hotels, with varying approaches being taken to tackle the issue.
