Rachel Reeves is preparing to introduce a significant support package for small businesses in what could be one of her final acts as Chancellor.
During her upcoming Mansion House speech, Ms. Reeves will reveal an extension of financial aid for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), potentially unlocking billions of pounds to bolster their operations.
One key initiative is the enhancement of a Government-backed guarantee on commercial loans for SMEs, designed to facilitate access to funding for British businesses seeking expansion opportunities.
Under the Growth Guarantee Scheme (GGS), the Government currently provides a 70% loan guarantee to small businesses, with over £3.7 billion already allocated to SMEs since its inception in 2022.
The Chancellor’s proposal includes a £6.5 billion increase to the scheme, projected to benefit around 33,000 businesses nationwide over the next three years. Additionally, the loan term is being elongated from six to ten years, and businesses with turnovers up to £54 million will now qualify for the program, up from the previous £45 million limit.
Ms. Reeves emphasized, “Our economic strategy has positioned Britain for a more secure future, fostering stability, facilitating investment, and implementing reforms. Small businesses play a vital role in our economy and regional growth. They have long faced challenges in securing necessary funds for expansion and job creation. Today’s reforms mark a significant stride towards unleashing their potential.”
In another context, the Chancellor cautioned Andy Burnham on the importance of having a well-thought-out governance plan upon assuming the role of Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.
Ms. Reeves stressed the need for a comprehensive plan, stating, “When Andy takes office, he must be prepared with a thorough strategy, as governing in Britain is arduous and presents various challenges and unexpected events.”
