A former British pub owner, Elaine McGowan, was fatally shot in broad daylight in the Caribbean. The incident occurred outside her godfather’s residence across from Trincity Mall in Trinidad on July 5. Reports indicate that Mrs. McGowan and her husband were approached by a gunman in a silver Nissan Tiida around 11 am on De La Mare Avenue. After the assailant fired shots, he fled the scene. Mrs. McGowan was rushed to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities are currently searching for the shooter.
Hemang Patel, a resident of Saltwood who knew Mrs. McGowan, described her as a kind person. He expressed shock and disbelief at the tragic event, emphasizing her positive qualities. The community, including Jakki Monroe, the current pub owner, was deeply saddened by the news and extended condolences to Mrs. McGowan’s family.
In a Facebook post, Mrs. McGowan’s sister, Joanne Butcher, shared details of the incident and highlighted Mrs. McGowan’s role as the Director of Cocal Retreat in Manzanilla. She emphasized the strong family values they were raised with and urged anyone with information to contact the Trinidadian police.
A spokesperson from the FCDO stated that they are offering support to Mrs. McGowan’s family and liaising with local authorities. The Mirror has reached out to Trinidad and Tobago police for an official statement.
