A 97-year-old woman, known as a gran, is on course to break her own Guinness World Record for being the oldest female wing walker. Betty Bromage, who resides in a retirement home in Cheltenham, Gloucs, embarked on her wing walking journey at the age of 87. She achieved her first global record at 93 and is now preparing for her sixth wing walk in August to reclaim her title.
Betty’s adventurous spirit was sparked by a Crunchie bar advert featuring a lady standing on top of a plane years ago. At 87, looking for new thrills in her retirement, she decided to try wing walking. Her initial wing walk in 2016 was deemed too ordinary, leading her to request more daring maneuvers from the pilot.
Following the passing of her husband, Betty embraced extreme challenges, completing multiple wing walks and other hair-raising activities like zip-lining and abseiling. In 2022, at the age of 93, she secured the Guinness World Record as the oldest female wing walker by performing stunts for charity.
Despite facing health challenges, including a recent stroke, Betty remains resolute in pursuing her passion for wing walking. Her upcoming flight on August 4 aims to support the stroke unit at Cheltenham General Hospital, where she received care. The CEO of Pegasus Homes, overseeing Betty’s care home, lauded her as an inspiration, highlighting her adventurous spirit and determination to push boundaries in later life.
Betty’s story serves as a testament to the belief that age should not hinder new experiences and adventures. The community eagerly anticipates her next record-breaking feat and continues to rally behind her as she soars to new heights.
