Teen’s Identity Stolen in Catfishing Scheme

Date:

A young woman fell victim to an extensive case of identity theft orchestrated by a serial catfisher who deceived individuals into believing she was their significant other. Sasha-Jay Davies, hailing from Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, had her images stolen from online profiles by Elha Mai Weston, a fellow teenager from the same town. Weston assumed Sasha-Jay’s identity to engage in relationships with men and friendships with women. The ordeal began when Sasha-Jay was 16, with a TikTok account using her picture.

Despite multiple attempts to involve law enforcement, the deception persisted for almost four years across various platforms like Tinder, Hinge, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and SoundCloud until legal intervention uncovered the perpetrator. Weston exploited Sasha-Jay’s identity to amass 100,000 followers from 2022 to 2026, engaging in romantic dialogues online even after reports were filed on the platforms where the catfishing occurred.

Various accounts were established to deceive men into believing they were romantically involved with Sasha-Jay, causing her to fear leaving her home after real-life encounters. The distress escalated when strangers recognized her in public, misled by Weston’s fabricated relationships. In one alarming incident, a man approached Sasha-Jay, convinced they were in a serious relationship after months of communication with one of Weston’s fake accounts.

Despite Sasha-Jay’s efforts to seek help, the catfishing persisted until an appearance on BBC’s ‘This Morning’ led to the removal of most accounts. Through investigation by Sasha’s legal representation, Cohen Davis Solicitors, Weston was identified and subsequently sued in London’s High Court. Weston admitted fault, apologized, and agreed to a £10,000 compensation settlement.

The court revealed Weston’s prolonged online impersonation scheme, utilizing Sasha-Jay’s images for various fake accounts under the names “Sophie” and “Sophie Kadare.” AI-generated images resembling Sasha-Jay were also used, leading to significant distress for the victim. The settlement, under a binding civil justice agreement, includes a commitment from Weston to refrain from repeating such actions in the future.

Sasha’s lawyer, Yair Cohen, emphasized the importance of identifying perpetrators of online abuse, highlighting the possibility of legal repercussions for such misconduct. The resolution marks a step towards reclaiming Sasha-Jay’s life after enduring years of emotional turmoil caused by Weston’s actions.
