Hospital Denies Role in Life-Altering Baby Switch

Date:

Two men’s families have accused a North Dakota hospital of a life-altering mistake after DNA tests revealed they were switched at birth 38 years ago. Kyle Bylin, who found his birth family through an at-home DNA test received as a Christmas gift, connected with his biological aunt leading to the discovery. Jeremy Morrison, the biological nephew of Bylin’s aunt, confirmed the switch through DNA testing, describing the revelation as mind-blowing.

Morrison was convinced of the switch upon seeing a photo of Bylin’s brother, noting their striking resemblance. Both Bylin and Morrison, born on January 26, 1988, at Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota, filed a lawsuit claiming they were sent home with the wrong parents.

While the hospital denies staff involvement in the switch, Bylin, formerly known as Jeremy Morrison, still possesses the hospital bracelet labeled with the wrong name. The discovery, made two years ago, has led to emotional family meetings, disorienting moments, and contemplation of missed experiences.

Evelyn Newton, who raised Bylin as her own, expressed feeling robbed of the life she could have had with her biological son while acknowledging that Kyle will always be her son. Unity Medical Center acknowledges the switch but states there is no evidence implicating their staff in the error.

Morrison maintains his love for the family who raised him, emphasizing the positive aspects of his upbringing despite the unexpected revelation. Bylin and Morrison have met their biological parents separately, describing the encounters as welcoming yet awkward, with plans to meet each other in the future.

According to Dr. Jonathan Marron, such mix-ups should be extremely rare in modern healthcare, attributing the reduced likelihood to electronic health records. Attorney Tim O’Keefe pursued a settlement with the hospital for emotional distress before resorting to legal action, as the families navigate their new realities and work on building relationships.

“I know the truth now, but we’re still working to build relationships,” Morrison stated, highlighting the ongoing process of adjusting to the newfound realities and the challenges of rebuilding lost time.
