Security agency MI5 recommended that public figures, including MPs and foreign dissidents, should construct secure safe rooms in their homes to protect against potential threats. The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), a branch of the UK’s domestic counter-intelligence and security organization, advised individuals to establish a designated “safer area” where they can seek refuge if targeted by hostile actors. These safe rooms, also known as panic rooms, are discreetly located within a residence and are designed to be inaccessible to intruders, providing a high level of physical protection.
In addition to creating bulletproof safe spaces, the guidance suggests considering the installation of fog machines as a deterrent. These secure rooms may feature bulletproof glass, security walls, steel panels, security cameras, and emergency phones for contacting authorities. The NPSA also recommends implementing measures like timed lighting to give the impression of occupancy when the residents are away and reducing potential hiding spots around the property by trimming hedges and foliage.
The NPSA issued this advice three months before the tragic death of Ann Widdecombe, a well-known public figure who passed away at her home in Devon following a targeted attack. The incident has prompted discussions about the security of public figures, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasizing the need for a review of current security arrangements. He expressed concern over the changing dynamics in political discourse and the impact of social media on fostering toxicity in public debates.
The investigation into Widdecombe’s death led to the arrest of a 28-year-old white British man from South Yorkshire on suspicion of murder and later on terrorism-related charges.
