Track icon Steve Cram commended Scottish runner Josh Kerr today for shattering the world record for the mile in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 60,000 in London.
Olympic silver medalist Kerr, 28, has now joined the ranks of British track legends such as Sir Roger Bannister, Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe, and Cram himself. Cram, aged 65, emphasized that the mile world record is globally recognized and remembered.
Kerr clocked a time of 3 minutes 42.66 seconds, breaking the record set 27 years ago by Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj by half a second.
Reflecting on his achievement, Kerr stated, “I will be out in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games for sure.” His meticulous preparation included specific training routines like ice baths, altitude chamber sessions, and dietary adjustments to enhance performance.
Starting his running career at the age of eight with the Edinburgh Athletic Club, Kerr later pursued his athletic endeavors in the US at the University of New Mexico. His upcoming event is the prestigious “Commonwealth Mile” at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Glasgow 2026 Men’s and Women’s Mile Finals are set to captivate audiences at the newly laid EDF Scotstoun Stadium during the Athletics and Para Athletics events, where fast times are anticipated. The championship will feature a total of 43 medal events in Athletics and 16 in Para Athletics over six days.
Kerr’s breakthrough in London, surpassing the previous record set by El Guerrouj, sets the stage for an exciting showdown in Glasgow alongside fellow Scots Jake Wightman and Neil Gourley. The Men’s 100m event in Glasgow will also showcase London Diamond League winner Kayinsola Ajayi in action after his impressive performance in London.
