A significant fire erupted on Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh yesterday, and firefighters are still actively working to contain the blaze this morning. The fire started near the Palace of Holyrood House around 6:30 pm on Sunday, with four fire engines from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on the scene.
Visible from the nearby Scottish Parliament, a large plume of smoke rose from the hill due to the fire. This incident coincides with Scotland facing dry conditions, with ongoing massive wildfires in the Cairngorms region.
This is not the first time Arthur’s Seat has been affected by fire, as an area of the hill was also scorched in August last year. The current fire on Arthur’s Seat was reported at 6:38 pm on Sunday, with the SFRS continuing its efforts to combat the fire while simultaneously dealing with the Cairngorms wildfire that started on Wednesday.
Authorities have closed roads in the vicinity to aid the firefighting efforts. Queens Drive near Pollock Halls down to Dynamic Earth is currently off-limits, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes. As of the latest update, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed no casualties have been reported.
In a separate incident in the Cairngorms National Park, firefighters are still battling a wildfire in the Glenmore area. Crews have been at the scene for the fifth consecutive day, utilizing specialized resources and helicopter water-bombing operations. The SFRS is making progress in collaboration with other agencies, constantly monitoring the situation to ensure safety.
Concerned residents displaced by the Cairngorms wildfire are urged to register their details for potential return to the exclusion zone by calling 01349 886691. However, the affected area remains closed to visitors, with continued road closures in place. The public is reminded to stay away from the area unless instructed otherwise.
