The Met Office has highlighted 22 areas that are expected to receive significant rainfall over the weekend, signaling a shift from the recent hot weather. A low-pressure system will move eastward, leading to a drop in temperatures. While temperatures reached 28.6C in Pershore, Worcestershire, on Monday, they are forecasted to fall to around 16C or 17C by Sunday afternoon.
The heaviest rain is predicted in parts of northern England on Sunday daytime, extending to the East of England in the evening. Showers are also expected in the Midlands. The rain comes as a relief following the dry spells in July and June, with over 18 million people facing a hosepipe ban this week.
According to the Met Office, these extreme weather patterns are becoming more common. Mike Kendon, a climate information scientist at the Met Office, stated that the UK’s warmest year on record was in 2025, with increasing temperatures likely to break records in the coming years.
The unsettled weather will persist into the following week, with rain expected on Monday, particularly in northwest Scotland. Temperatures are not anticipated to reach the high levels seen recently. The Met Office’s long-range forecast suggests a mix of sunny spells and rain across the country, with the possibility of high pressure bringing drier conditions, especially in the south.
In the coming days, the weather will vary across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Tonight, northern areas may experience light rain, while Wednesday will be cloudy in the far north but sunny and warm elsewhere. The outlook from Thursday to Saturday includes settled conditions with showers in the north and warm weather in the south.
More widespread rain is forecasted to move into the northern regions on Saturday.
