A young adult faced with the prospect of amputating his foot due to a rare nerve condition has received a groundbreaking implant to alleviate his pain.
For five years, 18-year-old Ralph Seed endured excruciating foot pain that made even the lightest touch unbearable, rendering him immobile. Diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), Ralph became the first teenager in the UK to undergo a spinal operation to interrupt the nerve signals responsible for registering pain in his brain.
The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle witnessed emotional moments as the Inceptiv implant was activated, instantly relieving Ralph of his suffering. Renowned neurosurgeon Akbar Hussain implanted thin wires near Ralph’s spinal cord, connected to a small battery beneath his skin. By emitting gentle electrical pulses, the device disrupts pain messages, preventing the brain from interpreting them as pain.
Ralph’s family, particularly his mother Tara Walton, expressed joy at witnessing Ralph’s renewed smile and determination.
