“UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham Opposes New Scottish Independence Referendum”

Date:

Andy Burnham, the newly appointed Prime Minister, conveyed to the First Minister of Scotland, John Swinney, that any discussion of another independence referendum is not to be entertained. During their initial meeting, Burnham stressed the importance of focusing on promoting economic growth and assisting families in dealing with the rising cost of living.

In a gathering held in Glasgow before the Commonwealth Games, the Makerfield MP engaged with the SNP leader and proposed enhanced collaboration on devolution to enhance the well-being of the Scottish population. Additionally, Burnham also met with Wales’ First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth during the same visit.

A spokesperson from Downing Street shared remarks following the meeting, highlighting the Prime Minister’s appreciation of Glasgow’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games and expressing eagerness to witness the opening ceremony. The discussions revolved around bolstering a model of devolution to enhance the quality of life for people in Scotland and the UK as a whole.

Burnham emphasized his belief in the positive impact of deeper devolution on community development and job creation, emphasizing the need to steer clear of distractions like an independence referendum that could hinder economic progress and support for families. The Prime Minister advocated for a constructive relationship between both sides and anticipated regular engagement with the First Minister moving forward.

Previous Prime Ministers have consistently rejected calls for another independence vote, with the UK Government asserting that the matter was settled following the 2014 referendum. Burnham has committed to fostering growth in all regions, empowering communities, and instilling hope throughout the UK.

In response, the Scottish Government affirmed their dedication to advocating for independence, pointing to recent electoral events as evidence of continued support. They also highlighted Burnham’s assurance not to sideline the Scottish Parliament and Government in further devolution efforts.
