Thrill-seekers can now experience an exhilarating ride over the majestic Swiss Alps on a massive mountain swing that propels riders over a cliff’s edge.
Located at the Villars ski resort, the BalancAIR swing stands at 12 meters high, perched at an elevation of 2,110 meters above sea level. This thrilling attraction accommodates up to three riders at a time, sending them soaring out above a breathtaking Alpine descent. Riders are securely fastened into saddle-style seats attached to a structure resembling an Alpine Ibex. They are then pulled back to a 90-degree angle before being released high above the valley below.
Alexandra Henchoz, 37, shared her nervousness before embarking on the adventure with her husband and 10-year-old daughter. She described feeling a pit in her stomach before being harnessed in. However, once the ride began, Alexandra expressed feeling an incredible sensation akin to flying like a bird.
Recently opened, the swing is part of the resort’s strategy to attract more visitors throughout the year, beyond the traditional ski season, in response to the impacts of climate change on Alpine destinations. Martin Deburaux, head of the Villars-Gryons-Diableret ski area, emphasized the importance of diversifying their offerings to adapt to changing conditions.
The swing serves as an all-season attraction that is not dependent on snow conditions, offering a unique experience for visitors. Despite record winter visitor numbers in previous seasons, the resort is proactively planning for the future due to warmer conditions. Martin highlighted the need to address climate change and explore alternatives to sustain jobs and the local economy built around ski facilities.
While the resort typically welcomes over 700,000 visitors during winter, summer visitation is around 100,000. The introduction of the new swing aims to attract more tourists outside the ski season, boosting off-season tourism.
One brave visitor, Marc Truffer, 70, described his mix of fear and amazement during the experience. He admitted to feeling scared but was left in awe without even letting out a scream. Despite the initial fright, he was captivated by the magnificent view as he descended on the swing.
