Long, airy, and cozy – these words seem fitting for a pair of lightweight summer trousers. Initially appealing, the £25.99 Zara trousers have garnered a concerning reputation on social media as the ‘Zara death trousers.’
These stylish wide-leg trousers not only offer a trendy look but also allegedly pose risks of causing injuries like fractured elbows, broken ribs, and cuts, according to shoppers.
Numerous TikTok videos have surfaced with women cautioning others about the dangers of wearing these infamous trousers. Some recounted harrowing experiences, such as needing medical attention after accidents like getting trapped in a tube station escalator or requiring an ambulance during their daily commute.
Intrigued by the trousers’ ominous reputation, I decided to try them on myself at Zara. Ignorant of the alarming stories, I initially found them appealing.
Despite their breathable fabric, loose fit, and elasticated waistband ideal for indulging at a BBQ, the trousers proved excessively long for my 5’3 frame, creating a tripping hazard. The slippery material caused the wide legs to rub together, making them prone to catching on each other while walking, particularly on stairs.
During a brief walk, I stumbled over the excess fabric, confirming the trousers’ accident-prone design.
One shopper, Lauren Hunter, shared her ordeal after sustaining suspected broken ribs while wearing the trousers. A sudden gust of wind tangled the loose fabric, causing her to fall and injure herself before being aided by a passerby.
Lauren’s experience mirrors that of another shopper, Bev Finch, who endured serious injuries necessitating surgeries and metal implants following a fall due to the trousers tangling around her feet.
