A rare tick-borne infection was recently discovered in New York as the first case reported. Michael Larkin, aged 67, contracted the Bourbon virus after being bitten by two lone star ticks while working outdoors in Suffolk County. Unlike common tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease, Bourbon virus lacks a preventive vaccine, standard test, or specific treatment, making it challenging for doctors to accurately diagnose.
Despite initially receiving antibiotics commonly used for Lyme disease, which proved ineffective against the Bourbon virus, Mr. Larkin’s condition worsened. It took five years and specialized testing to confirm the Bourbon virus diagnosis, highlighting the complexity of identifying this rare infection accurately.
Following his diagnosis in 2021, Mr. Larkin spent five days in the hospital before eventually recovering fully. However, the recovery process is not guaranteed for all individuals infected with the Bourbon virus. The virus has been reported in only a few cases across states like Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, with an average of less than one case per year, and sadly, some cases have resulted in fatalities.
Dr. Luis Marcos, who treated Mr. Larkin, emphasized the potential lethality of the Bourbon virus, noting its association with lone star ticks, commonly found in abundance on Long Island. The virus’s name originates from a Kansas county where it was first identified. Lone star ticks, recognized by a distinctive white dot on their backs, are known carriers of the Bourbon virus, thriving in wooded areas, tall grass, and brush.
The spread of the Bourbon virus is intricately linked to the prevalence of lone star ticks, which rely on white-tailed deer as hosts. With the increasing deer population and milder winters, these ticks have extended their range, posing a higher risk to humans. Apart from the Bourbon virus, lone star ticks can transmit other diseases like alpha-gal syndrome and ehrlichiosis, further highlighting the importance of preventive measures.
To minimize the risk of tick bites, individuals are advised to avoid grassy, wooded, and brushy areas and stick to designated trails when exploring natural settings. Taking precautions against tick exposure is crucial in regions where lone star ticks are prevalent to reduce the likelihood of contracting tick-borne infections.
