A map has been released pinpointing the areas in the UK most vulnerable to wildfires, coinciding with ongoing efforts to contain a fire near the largest nuclear power station in Britain.
The Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has indicated progress in managing the situation but has cautioned that the fire near Sizewell B, situated at Dunwich Heath close to Leiston, remains a dynamic incident.
Authorities reported that emergency crews and personnel continued to monitor the situation overnight, maintaining vigilance during the nighttime hours.
Against the backdrop of the climate crisis, devastating wildfires are becoming more prevalent, exacerbated by this year’s notably dry conditions and a series of heatwaves.
Data from the Moorland Association has been utilized to create a map illustrating the wildfire risk across the nation, highlighting the regions most susceptible to such disasters.
The analysis identifies the High Peak constituency in Derbyshire as the most high-risk area, notably due to the significant moorland fire at Tintwistle Moor that ignited on June 24, ultimately escalating to a major incident on July 13.
Following closely behind is the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire, encompassing areas like Hebden Bridge, known for being the filming location of the acclaimed series “Happy Valley”, with Tiverton and Minehead on the Devon-Somerset border ranking as the third most vulnerable area.
Overall, the western regions of England and Wales, as well as extensive parts of Scotland, face a heightened risk of wildfires.
Recently, the Environment Agency declared that half of England is experiencing drought conditions due to soaring temperatures and minimal rainfall. Water Minister Emma Hardy has issued a warning, urging preparedness for this “new normal” influenced by climate change, leading to low river levels, widespread hosepipe bans, and an increased risk of wildfires.
Firefighters across the UK have been actively combatting intense blazes this summer, including incidents at Dovestone in Greater Manchester, Tintwistle Moor in Derbyshire, and Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.
Meanwhile, in Europe, Spain declared a national emergency as multiple wildfires merged into an uncontrollable front, prompting evacuations in France.
Andrew Gilruth, CEO of the Moorland Association, attributed the escalating risk of wildfires to rewilding initiatives, highlighting the proliferation of highly flammable vegetation across Britain’s uplands. He urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take immediate action to mitigate this hazardous accumulation of vegetation.
In contrast, Rebecca Wrigley, chief executive of Rewilding Britain, emphasized that attributing blame to rewilding overlooks the core issues. She stressed the importance of addressing climate change and ecosystem degradation as the primary drivers of the escalating wildfire risks.
Wrigley advocated for preventive measures such as enhancing public awareness, ensuring swift response capabilities for fire and rescue services, and creating resilient landscapes that can withstand fire incidents.
The Moorland Association’s assessment of wildfire threats considers various factors such as fuel-providing vegetation, climate conditions, and terrain features that can amplify risks. It also evaluates the potential impact on properties and habitats and assesses evacuation challenges in worst-case scenarios.
