A foreign man has been apprehended in connection with the tragic demise of a Scottish woman whose lifeless body was found concealed in a suitcase within an abandoned structure in the Kypseli locality of Athens. The deceased, identified as Elisabeth-Jane Ross, aged 38 and hailing from the Edinburgh region, was stumbled upon by a homeless individual on July 18. Reports indicate that she passed away approximately five to seven days before the discovery of her remains.
The suspect, a 26-year-old individual, was taken into custody by Greek authorities. It was noted that during the interim period between Ross’s presumed death and the recovery of her body, her mobile device was allegedly utilized by someone to send messages posing as her.
The Hellenic Police managed to confirm the victim’s identity through fingerprint analysis. Toxicology examinations are ongoing to determine any potential foul play in her demise, with the cause of death yet to be officially disclosed.
Ross entered Greece on June 26 and initially resided with acquaintances in Piraeus before purportedly planning to rendezvous with American friends in another district of Athens, although the actual meeting remains uncertain.
Law enforcement reviewed surveillance footage to identify the suspect, who reportedly confessed to the crime. Allegedly, the man placed Ross’s body in a suitcase and transported it to the abandoned location where it was found. Subsequently, he allegedly used her bank card to withdraw funds. Authorities discovered a replica firearm and a knife at the suspect’s residence, leading to charges of manslaughter, robbery, and weapons violations.
Previously, a Greek police spokesperson emphasized the intensive investigative efforts to trace the individual responsible for leaving the suitcase without traces of fingerprints or DNA. The case has involved collaboration with various law enforcement agencies to resolve the incident.
Both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Police Scotland have expressed condolences and affirmed their cooperation with Greek authorities to support Ross’s family and facilitate the investigation.
