The FBI initiated an inquiry to determine if Donald Trump was working as an asset for Russia when he dismissed FBI Director James Comey, as revealed in recently declassified documents. The investigation, code-named “Oxferd Comma,” was part of Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s examination into potential collaboration between Trump’s 2016 campaign and the Kremlin to secure his presidency.
An official from the administration stated that there was no evidence supporting the theory that Trump was acting on behalf of Russia. The probe was concluded on April 9, 2019, without any charges brought against Trump. Trump has consistently criticized the investigation into his campaign’s alleged ties with Russia, labeling it a fabrication and a witch hunt.
Following Comey’s termination in May 2017, the FBI became suspicious that Trump might be obstructing justice, leading to the appointment of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller to investigate the President. Trump claimed he fired Comey due to his handling of Hillary Clinton’s email controversy in that year. However, some FBI officials speculated that Trump may have ousted Comey under Russian influence.
A declassified FBI memo justified the opening of the investigation as a necessary measure to address the perceived national security threat posed by the alleged activities. John Solomon, currently serving in the Trump administration on an election integrity task force, announced the release of the files before questioning whether the initiation of Oxferd Comma should be viewed as a deliberate act in a criminal plot to violate Trump’s civil liberties.
