Ukraine’s defense sector is collaborating with European firms to create a new missile system to replace the US Patriot missile, designed to counter Russia’s ballistic threats effectively.
The move comes as Ukraine’s President suggested that delays in receiving the urgently needed Patriots may be a strategic move by the US to undermine Kyiv’s position in future peace negotiations. Recent ballistic attacks by Kremlin forces in Ukraine claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals, while Ukraine retaliated with precision drone strikes targeting Russia’s energy sector.
Fire Point, a drone and missile manufacturer in Kyiv, has struck agreements with twelve European defense companies to provide radar and guidance technology for the Freyja missile project. The multinational initiative, officially launched in Paris with the participation of ten governments and twelve defense industry leaders such as Eurosam, Leonardo, Thales, and SAAB, aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Ukraine currently relies on US-manufactured Patriots to intercept ballistic missiles traveling at supersonic speeds, countering Putin’s military threats. However, due to global shortages exacerbated by conflicts in Iran, Ukraine faces vulnerabilities and urgent needs for defense systems, highlighting President Zelensky’s concerns.
Recent missile and drone attacks in Kyiv resulted in the deaths of 17 individuals, with an additional 13 casualties reported the following day. President Putin’s aggressive military actions have prompted pleas from Ukrainian leadership for swift political decisions and support from European and US partners to protect civilian lives.
President Zelensky emphasized the critical role of ballistic interceptors in preventing casualties and highlighted the insufficient supply of air defense missiles compared to previous years. Urgency is paramount in addressing the situation, as delays in delivering defense systems directly contribute to tragic consequences.
Fire Point’s CEO, Iryna Terekh, expressed progress in the new missile project, aiming to streamline production processes and reduce costs to approximately £800,000 per unit, significantly lower than the price of a Patriot missile. Efforts are underway to accelerate the project timeline and ensure successful integration of surveillance radars, tracking systems, and seekers. The European-Ukrainian interceptor missile has reportedly undergone successful testing five times, indicating advancement in the development process.
