A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history in North America as the recipient of a regenerated liver, paving the way for potential increased availability of transplantable livers. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, battled liver issues for 15 years, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prior to his liver transplant surgery at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), Landry received surprising news that his new liver had been regenerated using a novel machine developed by his doctor over several years.
The innovative technology, named Liver Assist, enables medical professionals to treat and evaluate a donated liver externally before transplantation. For Landry, this meant receiving a liver that may have been considered high-risk without the regeneration process. Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and conducted Landry’s surgery. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through the organ to reverse damage caused by oxygen deprivation during the external evaluation phase.
Hénault emphasized that the technology was in development for three years before its successful implementation. By simulating human body conditions, the machine allows doctors to assess liver function with a blood-based solution. Hénault highlighted that this technology is particularly beneficial for livers susceptible to oxygen-related damage during the transplant process. The CHUM, which conducts around 70 liver transplants annually, conducted a study in collaboration with Transplant Québec to identify previously rejected livers that could be salvaged using Liver Assist. Initial estimates suggest that the technology could increase the availability of 20 to 24 additional livers for transplantation in its inaugural year, with potential for further expansion as its usage becomes more widespread.
Hénault noted that studies have indicated reduced complications, reoperations, and hospital stays for appropriate patients using the technology. Landry experienced a successful transplant, evidenced by improved blood work results the day after the surgery. The patient’s remarkable recovery progress has been monitored closely, with Landry expressing eagerness to reunite with his family and resume his life in Gaspésie once discharged. He also hopes his story will raise awareness about organ donation, emphasizing the importance of donated organs in conjunction with advanced medical technology for successful transplants.
