The N.W.T. Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC) has observed a decrease in the number of bison road collisions in recent years. Between 2021 and 2025, there were a total of 60 collisions with bison reported, but in 2026, only one collision has been recorded so far.
Bison ecologist Terry Armstrong from ECC credits the decline in collisions to wildfires. He explained that wildfires prompt bison to shift their habitat, often moving to recently burned areas where they can find abundant vegetation. This behavior has led to a reduction in bison sightings near roads.
The shift towards post-wildfire areas is positive news for the N.W.T. bison population, which is classified as a threatened species both regionally and nationally. Current estimates suggest the population is in the thousands, with ECC approximating it to be slightly over 2,500 individuals.
According to ECC spokesperson Toyeke Adedipe, bison collisions between 2021 and 2025 resulted in the deaths of at least 76 bison, with most incidents occurring along Highway 3. Armstrong highlighted that the mating season from August to September increases the likelihood of aggressive encounters with bison on roads due to their territorial behavior.
Armstrong also emphasized the challenges posed by reduced visibility during darker hours and the importance of driving cautiously to avoid collisions, especially during rutting season. He advised drivers to maintain a safe distance from bison, refrain from honking at them, and never attempt to interact with the animals.
Describing bison as the largest land mammals in North America and resilient survivors, Armstrong underscored the need to respect their space and uniqueness while sharing the road with them.
