An 85-year-old golfer from Fall River, N.S., named David McDonald recently achieved a remarkable feat by shooting an even-par 72 at the challenging Ashburn Golf Club course. Despite his age, McDonald displayed exceptional skill on the long and demanding course with large, fast greens. This accomplishment is even more impressive considering that shooting one’s age in golf is considered a significant milestone.
McDonald, who typically plays from the silver tees, covering nearly 5,800 yards, frequents the course three to four times a week, often opting to walk instead of using a cart. His dedication to the game and commitment to staying active have clearly paid off, as evidenced by his consistent performance and endurance on the golf course.
Having faced some health challenges in the past, McDonald credits his strong knees, hips, and legs to regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle. He emphasized the importance of staying active and engaged, stating, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” His passion for golf and dedication to maintaining his physical well-being have enabled him to continue enjoying the sport and achieving impressive results on the course.
Despite his advanced age, McDonald’s love for golf remains unwavering, stemming from his introduction to the game at the age of 30 while serving in the air force in Cape Breton. He quickly excelled in golf, winning multiple national titles during his military career. Following his retirement from the military in 1995, McDonald settled in Fall River and continued to excel in golf, winning the provincial senior men’s championship multiple times.
With a total of 17 career holes-in-one under his belt, McDonald’s passion for the game remains strong as he continues to strive for his 18th ace. His dedication to healthy living, regular exercise, and unwavering commitment to golf have not only contributed to his success on the course but also serve as an inspiration to others looking to maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle well into their senior years.
