“Tragic Filicide Case Prompts Urgent Calls for Prevention”

Date:

The recent court proceedings involving a Saint John man who was found guilty of fatally stabbing his two sons have sparked shock and introspection among the public, prompting a quest for understanding and prevention strategies.

Roman Kamyshnyy, aged 46, received two concurrent life sentences without parole for 25 years after being convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 10-year-old and 17-year-old sons earlier this year. The sentencing marked a tragic conclusion to the case that left many grappling with the inconceivable act of a parent killing their own children.

Domestic violence expert Peter Jaffe highlighted the unsettling reality that approximately 30 children are killed by a parent each year in Canada. He emphasized that a significant portion of these incidents, known as filicides, occur in the context of intimate partner violence, often as an act of revenge by a disgruntled ex-partner.

A study released this year revealed that New Brunswick had the highest number of domestic violence-related homicides in Atlantic Canada between 2012 and 2022, shedding light on the concerning prevalence of such tragedies in the region. The study also indicated that the risk of domestic violence-related fatalities, including those involving children, remains a critical issue that requires attention and proactive measures.

Experts emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs and risk factors associated with domestic violence, particularly during periods of relationship breakdown and separation. They underscored the need for enhanced public awareness, comprehensive risk assessments, and updated tools to identify and intervene in potentially harmful situations before they escalate to fatal outcomes.

While acknowledging the complexities and challenges involved in addressing domestic violence, experts remain optimistic about the possibility of reducing such tragedies in the future through concerted efforts, education, and effective prevention strategies.

If you are in immediate danger or require assistance related to family or intimate partner violence, please seek help through local support services or contact emergency services.
