Norway Soccer President Slams FIFA’s Handling of Senior Official’s Dismissal

Date:

Norway soccer president Lise Klaveness criticized FIFA’s decision to dismiss a senior official who spoke out against Gianni Infantino’s World Cup financing plan, labeling it as unacceptable and a demonstration of management through fear. Klaveness emphasized the importance of FIFA leadership standing up against detrimental directives, particularly addressing FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström.

Lamour, the former FIFA chief operating officer, was relieved of his duties following his public criticism of Infantino’s $20 billion private equity initiative, which led to its swift termination. Klaveness praised Lamour as an exceptional football administrator and urged FIFA to uphold the principles of good governance in football.

The fallout from Lamour’s remarks has plunged Infantino into a crisis, facing backlash from various football bodies over a controversial proposal to sell future World Cup revenues to investors. Lamour’s statement highlighted the lack of transparency in Infantino’s leadership and called for global soccer leaders to prioritize the sport’s best interests.

Klaveness clarified that Lamour’s departure was a dismissal rather than a resignation, suggesting external pressure influenced the decision-making process within FIFA. Despite FIFA’s gratitude towards Lamour for his service, Klaveness emphasized the necessity of his intervention in halting the contentious project.

Infantino convened a meeting in Morocco without Lamour, where senior management expressed support for his presidency after acknowledging past mistakes. Klaveness criticized the atmosphere of fear within FIFA’s management structure, asserting that it does not serve the sport’s welfare.

Prior to the controversy surrounding Infantino’s financing proposal, his reelection as FIFA president appeared assured. However, the upcoming deadline for potential challengers to enter the race indicates a shift in the political landscape within the organization.
