The decline in acceptance has been attributed to factors like confusion and fear, according to Wayne Bernakevitch, the founder of Regina Civic Awareness Action Network. Bernakevitch suggested that daily struggles and distractions may be diverting people’s attention from embracing gender diversity. Additionally, political influences have played a crucial role in shaping attitudes, as noted by Leah Hamilton, a professor at Mount Royal University.
The survey conducted by Statistics Canada between October 2024 and July 2025 coincided with the American election, leading to potential external influences affecting Canadian perceptions. The study highlighted the impact of political rhetoric on marginalized communities and the scapegoating by conservative politicians, as mentioned by Corinne Mason, a women and gender studies professor.
The report also indicated that the politicization of trans and gender diverse individuals during recent elections in Saskatchewan could have contributed to the decrease in support.
